WAYPOINT WATERFRONT PARK
Waypoint Park has been a priority project for public water access and enjoyment of Bellingham’s Waterfront District development site. Implementation of this unique waterfront park is the first phase of a 15-year planning effort to create a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood with new parks and trails along the Puget Sound affording breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands. The park celebrates the site’s post-industrial fabric by reuse of the iconic Acid Ball as an art piece within the park. The goal for the project was to design a park that provides shoreline/water-related access for all ages and abilities. The park will provide a range of passive recreational opportunities, as well as shoreline restoration and habitat, small gathering areas, picnic spots and opportunities for interpretation and education. The playground’s design allows children to use their imagination to navigate their way around the irregular mounds and natural logs. The log scramble invokes the vernacular of logs strewn along a beach. Completed by Chris Jones prior to founding Groundswell.
