FRITZ HEDGES WATERWAY PARK
Located on a historic industrial site near the University of Washington, Fritz Hedges Waterway Park provides a unique south facing experience to access Portage Bay, Lake Union and Lake Washington. Historically, the site has supported indigenous portages, timber processing, a marine industry, and the Chris Craft boat distribution center. Park design removed existing bulkheads, dilapidated piers, and piles, and required the excavation and containment of contaminated soils to make way for a restored native shoreline.
The goal for the project was to design a park that integrates public use with marine infrastructure while affording water-related access for all ages and abilities. The park provides a range of passive recreational opportunities, as well as shoreline restoration and habitat, small gathering areas, picnic spots and opportunities for interpretation and education. A new pier provides seating and views to Portage Bay and a new hand-carried-watercraft ramp provides direct water access. The design offers fully accessible amenities within a compact urban park area and will substantially re-unite UW with the waterfront. Completed by Chris Jones, as Principal at Walker Macy.
